I’ve resolved to stop the soul searching about Botox. Like many things that I do in life, it’s not morally perfect and it’s not perfectly safe 🖊️ RebeccaCNReid

When I found out that I was pregnant I was delighted, but one of my first thoughts was: “God, I wish I’d got a Botox top-up before.” When I had to stop breastfeeding following surgery for pancreatitis, I was heartbroken. But the one delicious silver lining was that I could finally get my forehead seen to. I admit that I didn’t feel like Mother of the Year as I lay back, holding my three month old, while the nice lady injected my forehead.

Sometimes I forget that we’re not “supposed” to be so open about Botox, or filler, or anything else . Cosmetic enhancement, it seems, is supposed to be a secret. Whenever I admit to it, I’m met with surprise. When I moved to south west London I asked a group of local mums if anyone had recommendations for a hairdresser, an eyebrow person and a Botox doctor. They were amused but a little bit shocked by the latter. Which is unquestionably a good thing.

It’s not easy to square my love of having my face injected with a toxin with my feminist principles. I know that I should want to age however I age, and allow my face to look increasingly like a used paper napkin, and talk about how I earned all those lines through living and laughing. But honestly, I also earned a lot of these lines from crying over men who didn’t treat me properly, staying up late anxious and miserable, postpartum sleep deprivation and not wearing sun cream.
