Maciej Mikolajczyk has been jailed after stabbing a 17-year-old college student Alan Szelugowski 20 times. The judge noted that it paints a ‘depressingly familiar picture’ of knife crime on Britain’s streets.
The three defendants had previously been the subject of anonymity orders, but are now allowed to be named because they have since turned 18.
‘This was brutal mindless violence which bore all the hallmarks of being pre-planned, Alan was persuaded by you Maciek Mikolajczyk to meet him in that park that night at a set time on the understanding you would be alone and unarmed.‘Alan who was small in stature just five foot one inches tall stood little chance.
‘These events that night display another depressingly familiar picture of young men some armed with knives being willing to indulge in horrific violence for it seems little if any reason.’Mikolajczyk claimed during the trial he had acted out of self defence. In a statement Alan’s mother, 34, who has two other children, said: ‘Alan would do anything to avoid conflict and he would walk two hours to a nearby shop simply if it meant him avoiding a local gang in the area – his brutal murder shocked us all.
