Children enjoy a free ride, circa 2918, on some of the city’s “flock of kind, gentle and intelligent donkeys” along a scenic trail in Brackenridge Park.A Dallas friend sent me this . I am a native but I can’t answer the question . Help, please? And where on the San Antonio Zoo campus would it be?This idiosyncratic structure, adorned with an Alamoesque hump in a midlife makeover, is known as the “donkey barn,” although it hasn’t housed hoofstock for most of its life.

The “flock of kind, gentle and intelligent donkeys” was presented to the accompaniment of the municipal band at a June 10, 1916, dedication ceremony in the park, where 12 burros were paraded wearing pink pompoms on their ears and yellow blankets on their backs. Without much adult supervision, the sturdy animals followed the same route multiple times a day, serving hundreds of the city’s children every weekend in good weather. When the little “trains” came back, Young would switch out the passengers for the next group. Seat, send off and repeat. Nervous children were allowed to stay and watch to see how they felt about taking a turn; enthusiastic riders were allowed to go again, as long as they shared with another rider.
