BabylonMovie stars Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva tell Screen Rant about going to the extremes, revisiting the classics, and improvising in English for Damien Chazelle’s sprawling epic of Hollywood excess and evolution:
Damien Chazelle has gone bigger and bolder than ever with Babylon, a sprawling epic set in the formative years of Hollywood. Tracking the shift from silent-era behind-the-scenes debauchery to the rise of sound pictures and a certain sterilization of the film industry, Babylon is the result of 15 years of world-building and research.
Diego Calva: I mean, it was the greatest experience in my life; but also, I had to learn English. That was hard, because sometimes I had ideas, you know, for lines and things like that, and I wasn't fast enough to translate myself into English. And Margot, you always seem like you give so much to every role that you do. But I feel like it's on another level - It's incredible. So how was it for you to go to every extreme in this movie, and then make sure that you're also playing someone who the audience knows is a real character, a real person?
Brad Pitt: First of all, it's Damien Chazelle. When he came on with Whiplash, it was something new and fresh, and it had a kinetic energy that I hadn't seen before. And, you know, he's three for three. Now he's four for four in my mind.
