When Milly Byrne was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at 20 months and placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant, her parents Charlene and Gavin were told to prepare for the worst
A brave little five year old defied all odds to start her first day at national school on Friday, while her parents who never thought they'd see the milestone watched on with pride. But the little warrior battled to get better and, after fighting many secondary illnesses since receiving her new heart, Milly was counting down the days until her first day at big school at Scoil Bhríde, Mullaghrafferty, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.
"She was initially treated for Acute Myocarditis but there was no recovery so Milly was transferred to the Freeman Hospital in the UK where she was fitted with a Berlin Heart Ventricular Assist Device, which can be used to support children in severe heart failure, either until recovery or until a heart transplant is possible.
"Thankfully, she fought through it all and got stronger and her first massive milestone was starting play school last year, where she excelled with the help of brilliant staff. She had no interaction with people and other kids for so long and here she was at playschool. It was amazing
