Police in Rumson, Little Silver, Middletown and neighboring communities are urging residents to lock their vehicles.

Rumson police said some of the attempts have been “brazen” and that the thieves “have been known to carry weapons.” In Middletown, police said the two vehicles have been stolen in the past week are among six taken so far this year. Last year, there were 31 vehicle thefts in the town of more than 67,000 — the county’s most populous.In one theft, a vehicle was taken from a gas station — one of three thefts this year in which a vehicle was running and unattended, police said. Another was stolen from a home in the Lincroft section of town after thieves entered the home and swiped the key fob, Bailey said.
Oliva said two vehicles have been stolen in the approximately 3-square mile borough this year — one in January and one in March, though there have been several other attempted thefts in recent weeks. Nine have been taken since the start of 2021, Oliva said.
