Presidential election in Brazil will go to a second round runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro, says the electoral authority
Supporters of Brazilian former President and candidate for the leftist Workers Party Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva react as they watch the vote count of the legislative and presidential election, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on October 2, 2022.
Lula, the popular but tarnished ex-president vying to make a comeback at 76, vowed for his part to "get the country back to normal" after four divisive years under Bolsonaro. That put the veteran leftist within arm's reach of winning outright and avoiding a runoff on October 30. "As a black woman, it's been hard to see the country go backwards in terms of discrimination, prejudice, homophobia and also the economy," she said.
