A Brazilian student studying in Ireland claims he was deported over Christmas after a supposed paperwork error left him waiting for his GNIB renewal approval.
A Brazilian student studying in Ireland claims he was deported over Christmas due to a paperwork error . He had applied to renew his registration with the Garda National Immigration Bureau ( GNIB ) and received an email confirming receipt of his application. The email stated that processing times were 10-15 working days. However, almost two months later, he was still waiting for approval.
The student said he tried to show the email to the immigration officer upon his return to Ireland, but the officer didn't believe him. He was subsequently deported. The Department of Justice website had confirmed special allowances were being made over Christmas for students experiencing delays in the GNIB process, allowing them to travel with recently expired IRP cards if they had submitted an application for renewal before the expiry date
