Bread, pasta and rice are three of the most commonly consumed foods in the UK, but are often maligned as being bad for us - however, the experts say that is not necessarily the case
Three of the UK's most beloved staples – bread, pasta, and rice – often get a bad rap for their carbs and so-called "empty calories". However, food experts are stepping up to defend these dietary mainstays, highlighting their role in a balanced diet.
The common belief that bread, pasta, and rice are diet no-nos due to their carb content has been challenged. These carbs are thought to cause blood sugar spikes and, if not burned off, can lead to weight gain as sugar in the body.READ MORE: Joe Canning lifts lid on fatherhood as life with baby daughter Josie is 'brilliant'
The Sunday Times highlighted a 2023 study from the University of Minnesota, which suggests that pasta might not be the villain it's often made out to be when it comes to weight gain. In fact, the study indicates that pasta is "generally not associated with body weight or body composition and may be inversely associated with BMI or abdominal obesity, particularly when consumed in the context of a healthy dietary pattern", reports Surrey Live.
Dr Leeming also mentioned: "When you cut carbs out, your body has to work harder to find other energy sources, which can lead to fatigue, brain fog and irritability."
