Blackpool have axed Appleton with the club in the Championship relegation zone
The Seasiders are 10 without a win in the Championship and sit in the relegation zone, three points from safety. Blackpool have won just once since October - the thrashing of Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round.
Appleton's final game in charge was the 2-0 reverse to promotion chasing Watford last weekend and Blackpool will now begin the hunt for his successor. They host Huddersfield Town on Bloomfield Road on Saturday.Appleton was appointed in the summer after Neil Critchley left to become Steven Gerrard's assistant at Aston Villa. His first game was a victory over Reading but that is one of just six league wins all season.
Appleton was in his second stint as manager and his return was not a universally popular move with supporters. In recent weeks the relationship between fans and boss has fractured further and the 47-year-old has paid the price with his job. A club statement read: "Blackpool Football Club has today relieved Michael Appleton of his duties as Head Coach. Assistant Head Coach David Kerslake will also be leaving with Michael.
"The club would like to thank Michael and David for their efforts during their time at Bloomfield Road and wish them all the best for the future. The club hope to be able to announce a new Head Coach in the coming days."Follow our Blackpool FC twitter page for regular updates, as well our Facebook page, and sign-up to our newsletter for all the latest news straight to your inbox every morning.
