A coin collector has sold a rare Brexit 50p coin for an eye watering £10,000 on eBay
The seller, from Glasgow, sold the special edition coin on the site on February 6, Glasgow Live reports. The lucky collector described the coin as a 'very rare find', and was launched on the date of Brexit on January 31, 2020, and features the words "Peace, Prosperity and Friendship With All Nations" on its reverse side.
According to Coin Checker, an estimated ten million of the special coins are still in circulation. Coin Checker said: "On the 31st January 2020 the United Kingdom left the European Union – over three and half years after the Vote."This departure is possibly one of the most historically significant events to happen in modern history and to commemorate this day, The Royal Mint issued this Withdrawal from the European Union 50p.
"The reverse design features messaging ‘Peace, Prosperity and Friendship with all nations’ alongside the official withdrawal date, 31 January 2020." Change Checker expert Alexandra Fiddons previously told the Mirror that particularly popular coins often sell for well above their worth. She said: "Sometimes we see coins listed for prices well above their face value on the secondary market. Sometimes this is driven by low mintage figures, meaning there are fewer coins for people to collect, but it can also be driven by the popularity of the theme.
