Brexit plans in crisis as EU leaders meet to consider extension

What then happens if the House of Commons approves the withdrawal agreement?

If the withdrawal agreement is passed next week, then the extension is granted and the UK will use the extra time given under an extension to pass the necessary legislation to allow it to exit at the end of May, or end of June. The EU would want to be content that there is a clear passage for this legislation, too.

Part of the problem, if the House of Commons does vote down the deal, is that time will then be very short to work out what happens next, before the due date of departure – 11pm on March 29th – arrives. As is normal, there are draft conclusions, agreed in advance by diplomats and government officials, circulating on the other aspects of the summit today. But there are no draft conclusions on Brexit. That’s because nobody knows what the leaders will decide.

Irish sources say two things: they haven’t seen this level of uncertainty about a summit since the Greek crisis, and we may all be back here next week. This process has long been described by various sides as a game of chicken. If that is so, it only gets interesting at the end. And we are in the end phase now.
