Brexit in crisis as EU leaders meet and French president raises new no-deal fears

That is one key issue which EU leaders will be discussing. And French president Emmanuel Macron laid down a clear marker on his way into today’s meeting, saying his view was that if the withdrawal agreement was not passed, then “we will be going to a no-deal.”If the withdrawal agreement is passed next week, then the extension is granted and the UK will use the extra time given under an extension to pass the necessary legislation to allow it to exit at the end of May, or end of June.

Tusk had suggested that he could hold an emergency summit of EU leaders next week, if needed. There has been speculation that the EU might be willing to offer the UK a longer extension, subject to strict conditions, including the necessity that it elect MEPs. But this cannot now be taken for granted. And it is also not clear whether the UK government would sign up for whatever conditions were set down, if the EU did decide to give it more time.
