We caught up with Brian Dowling for our latest issue of VIP Magazine, which has hit shelves this week. So exciting!

We caught up with Brian Dowling for our latest issue of VIP Magazine, which has hit shelves now. October is a big month for him as he kicks things off with the release of his documentary Toxic Threads.

Describing it to us, he explains: “In it I examine the realities of online bullying and harassment through the lens of my own experience as the target of online trolling, uncovering the human impact of abuse behind the screen. ” Brian and his husband Arthur Gourounlian have both been at the receiving end of horrible online hate.

“I’m well aware that the life that I lead may ruffle feathers for people. I’m very well aware I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m fine with that,” Brian tells us.

“I’m also very well aware that I will be judged purely on the job that I do because it affords me so much in my life. But I just think there should be legality and stuff put in place that protects people from slander, from malicious lies, from harassment, from stalking. And I kind of go on this journey with Toxic Threads of sitting down with professionals and just wondering what can we do.

”“There’s no one governing this, the government aren’t really doing anything, and neither are the platforms themselves. But I do feel something needs to be done, and I do think it comes back to us as individuals. I was never really into reporting accounts online. I used to just kind of ignore it, and now I do report, I do block.

”“Growing up in Rathangan as a gay kid, and being name called and picked on for being different, fostered a level of resilience in me. But there seems to be a thinking that just because I put stuff out there, that I should expect to be ripped to shreds. Almost like I’m looking for it.

“Also, I’ve learned as I head towards fifty, that I cannot be responsible for how other people feel. I just have to try and be the best person I can, bring up my kids, you know, stay sane, stay healthy, work, and then be responsible for things I ca nbe responsible for. ”
