Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba has joined French side Lens on a permanent transfer.

that a deal had been agreed between Forest and Lens, after the 28-year-old told the club he wouldn’t be signing a new contract in June. But Forest only recently made an attempt to extend those terms, through a proposal that is believed to have been deemed by the keeper as unacceptable.

Samba’s decision to turn that offer down and reluctantly seek an exit was said not to be financially motivated but about respect for his achievements, importance and popularity at the City Ground. Samba was one of the heroes of Forest’s play-off run at the end of the 2021-22 season, which saw them promoted to the Premier League under Steve Cooper. The goalkeeper saved three penalties in the semi-final shoot-out against Sheffield United to set up a final against Huddersfield Town.

Forest have already moved to replace Samba, signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a season-long loan. Samba previously played for Le Havre, Marseille and Caen before moving to Forest in the summer of 2019.
