Highway was only 15 and the camp was his family’s way of life. An evacuation order asking them to abandon it devastated him.
It’s been almost three decades since Highway decided to stay and fight the fire. Depending on how he counts the blazes, there’s been either about 250 or 300 since then. As the bear exploded off into the terrain, Highway says it looked back as if to ask him if he had learned his lesson.Highway has had plenty of experience to solidify that attitude. Few firefighters stick around on the front line until their early forties. The work is too strenuous, both mentally and physically.“You start questioning what you’re doing there,” he says. “You start to really wonder if you’re making that impact.
“That firefighter mystique has injured a lot of people,” he says. “The reality is agencies across the country are struggling with that sort of masculinity. It’s toxic as hell.”
