Lancashire's brilliant £2 bus route that takes you from urban life to seaside air
It is easy to dismiss public transport, citing the expense, unreliability or inconvenience of it compared to hopping in the car and travelling directly to your destination. But your opinion may well be swayed when you hear that you can take a two-hour bus ride from urban Lancashire to the beautiful Morecambe Bay coast, for just £2.
Nope, your eyes are not deceiving you, as the government's 'get around for £2' bus fare scheme has been extended to October 31. It is the perfect route for a day out to pack in as many different sites in the county as possible, from rural villages to built up estates. Begin your journey in the heart of Preston city centre, which boasts award-winning public parks, a historic indoor markets and a bustling shopping high street. While it also comes to life at night, with cocktail bars, restaurants serving an array of world cuisines and live events.
The bus then heads through Fulwood, Broughton and Bilsbarrow villages before reaching the Wyre and the lush, ancient market town of Garstang, which is the 'Blue Plaque capital of Lancashire'. Next you'll pass through Cabus and Galgate before reaching the stunning city in the shadows of a castle - Lancaster.
And finally, you'll pass coastal hamlets and country lanes before reaching your final destination on the coast at Morecambe. There you can walk along the promenade or even on the beach, grab a drink at the art deco Midland Hotel and pose for a selfie at the Eric Morecambe statue.
