Leslie Green, a 70-year-old British man, tragically died while on vacation in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, after contracting salmonella. His wife, Julie, is seeking answers regarding the resort's food safety practices, claiming she witnessed instances of lukewarm food and a lack of hygiene among staff. This case highlights the serious dangers of foodborne illnesses and the need for vigilance during travel.

A British father tragically lost his life while on vacation in the Canary Islands last year after contracting salmonella. Leslie Green, 70, and his wife Julie embarked on a four-star resort holiday in Fuerteventura to celebrate their birthdays. However, just eight days into their trip, Leslie fell ill with severe diarrhea, leading to dehydration and a rapid deterioration of his health. On October 12th, he was seen by the resort doctor and transported to a local clinic for fluid replacement.

Despite these interventions, Leslie's condition worsened, prompting his admission to the hospital the following day. Diagnosed with salmonella, Leslie experienced life-threatening complications including kidney failure, pneumonia, and sepsis, a condition where the body's response to infection turns against itself. He was placed in an induced coma, but his health continued to decline, leaving doctors unable to save him. Leslie passed away on November 4th, hours after his life-support machine was switched off.Their daughter, Becci, 35, flew to be with her parents at the time of their father's passing. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, 38, who was battling end-stage kidney failure, was medically unfit to travel. Leslie's body was repatriated a week later for a post-mortem examination, with the results still pending. Julie expressed grave concerns about the resort's food safety, citing instances of lukewarm carbonara sauce, undercooked chicken, and a noticeable lack of hand-washing among staff, who were observed mixing fresh food with dishes that had been left out. She shared the harrowing experience of watching her husband's health deteriorate in the hospital, saying, 'Seeing him in hospital in those last few days was awful. He looked so frail, and I felt so helpless as I couldn’t do anything for him. Saying goodbye to Leslie and seeing his life slip away is something I don’t think I’ll get over.'Julie fondly remembered Leslie as a kind and gentle man who loved his family, kept fish, played darts and pool, and was a loyal supporter of his football team, Bury FC. She stated, 'I still can’t comprehend how we went on holiday together, but Leslie never came home. If it wasn’t for the pain I wake with daily, it almost wouldn’t seem real. Leslie and I had so many plans for our retirement, but I feel cheated that these have been taken away from us in the cruellest way. The least I deserve is answers.'Jennifer Hodgson, an international serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Julie, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, 'This is an extremely worrying case with the first-hand accounts we’ve heard from our clients who stayed at the resort at the same time being very similar.' She stressed the potential severity of salmonella and other gastric illnesses: 'The impact of salmonella and other gastric illnesses should never be downplayed. They can result in serious complications leading to serious injury and sadly death, as Leslie’s case tragically highlights. While nothing can make up for what’s happened, we’re now investigating our client’s concerns and are determined to provide them with not only the answers they deserve, but access to specialist rehabilitation and support.' With the holiday season approaching, Hodgson urged travelers to exercise caution.
