British government to pay for legal support of soldier charged for Bloody Sunday
Facing pressure in London to offer an amnesty to soldiers, he went on: “The government will urgently reform the system for dealing with legacy issues. Our serving soldiers cannot live in constant fear of prosecution.”Speaking on RTÉ’s Sean O’Rourke Show, Mr Campbell, who represents East Derry in the House of Commons, said the situation facing the soldiers on the ground that day in 1972 had to be considered.
“I was there as a teenager that day as petrol bombs rained down, as shops and soldier were attacked and police were killed,” he said.
