A British lawyer has led a successful battle to change the course of a high-power electric power line that was to pass through a protected nature area in southern Spain

, fought alongside neighbours in Bédar, a village of just over 900 inhabitants in Almeria, to change the course of the line that was designed to run along a series of pylons.

The European Union nature park is home to protected birds like the golden eagle, peregrine falcons and Bonelli’s eagle, which are often killed when they collide with power lines. “I think this is an example of people getting together for what is right and within their rights, and it proves things can be achieved. Citizens can get involved in public affairs. They must protect their community,” Mr Vazquez told“You cannot have an area of natural beauty, lots of tourism, and lots of industry, and destroy the environment with loads of solar panels and wind turbines.”
