British volunteer Michael Betoin is currently on his third volunteering trip in Bakhmut, a city in the eastern Donbas region 🇺🇦 He's given Metro some insight into sheer devastation the war has caused in Ukraine 👇

Michael Betoin witnessed the destruction in and around Bakhmut as he drove essential supplies to the embattled city

Mr Betoin arrived last week on the solo journey and has also completed a tense, 12-hour road mission toHe described the rusting, burnt-out hulks of Russian vehicles as ‘too many to count’ as he took on his most dangerous aid trip in the country to date. ‘There’s a lot of tanks and hardware shifting about, you get the feeling that they are building for the mother of all battles,’ he said.

‘We took two tonnes of supplies for civilians and military, such as food, bedding, thermal clothing and anything to keep the soldiers fit and healthy and to keep them going for as long as possible.‘Some of the professional soldiers have been there for nearly a year without any time off and they are nearing the limit of what they can physically do, they are exhausted.

‘On the way to Bakhmut we witnessed mind-blowing destruction, with entire villages reduced to rubble. In one village every house had been destroyed for no apparent reason, it’s just to make a point.’
