WNBA star Brittney Griner has been freed in a prisoner swap and is in the custody of U.S. officials. The U.S. has freed convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner, according to reports. Go deeper:
Reports suggested that the Biden administration would be willing to exchange— currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the U.S. — for Griner and Whelan's freedom.
During an address Thursday morning, Biden thanked the United Arab Emirates for helping facilitate Griner's return. Griner landed in the UAE after leaving Russia, Biden said."After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Britney will soon be back in the arms of her loved one and she should have been there all along," Biden said in an address Thursday morning.
