High emotions as Irish duo become first heavyweight crew to take medal at Games
Philip Doyle held out a tired hand. Daire Lynch grabbed it and sucked in some air. It was done. They were done. But Olympic medalists at last.
“Yeah, he’s always in your thoughts,” said Doyle. “I only just started my rowing career and brought back my first medal to him in the hospice in Newry. “But she’s some woman for one woman. I love when she’s here to watch, she gives me a bit of a spur on.” It’s less than 18 months since Lynch forged this partnership with Doyle, but on the waters of Vaires-sur-Marne they rowed like old hands, edging out USA for third place.“I wasn’t feeling great at all,” said Lynch. “The Viper was telling me it was in my head, but it wasn’t.
Lynch knew he had more to give in the boat, so he trained on his own every morning and evening on a rowing machine in a New York basement with the Olympics in mind."Yeah, sure that’s why I came back. I was over there working, and I said, ‘Sure there’s more to life than this’. I just started training,” said Lynch. “There was a gym in the building and I started training on the rowing machine morning and evening.
