Principal Partner Jimmy Haslam, Executive Vice President, Football Operations & General Manager Andrew Berry and Executive Vice President, Partner JW Johnson talk during the Orange and Brown practice at FirstEnergy stadium.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns Executive VP of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry said on Tuesday he expects Baker Mayfield to be the Browns starting quarterback in 2022 and bounce back from a disappointing 2021 season.

Mayfield, after a promising finish to the 2020 season, struggled in 2021, especially after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder attempting to make a tackle in Week 2 following an interception. “It’s easy to forget what we’ve seen with Baker over the past several years, obviously he had his most productive season in this offense under Kevin as early as last year,” Berry said. “I think we’ve been with Baker for a long period at this time, we know his work ethic, we know his drive, we’ve seen him as a talented passer in this league and we’re looking forward to him getting healthy and continue to make improvements and expect him to bounce back next year.

Berry didn’t engage with a question as to whether the expectation is to move forward with the fifth-year option, simply reiterating he expects Mayfield to bounce back. When asked if he was comfortable playing Mayfield without a new contract he responded, “Yeah, I’m pretty comfortable, we have a lot of guys that will have gone into their final years along those lines, that’s not really something that goes into the calculus for us.
