What looked like the entire Browns sideline swarmed York after the kick went through.
The goal when the Browns took over from their own 25-yard line was simple: get to the 40-yard line.
It harkened back to the night of the Browns’ rookie dinner, when York told quarterback Jacoby Brissett he just needed the 40. The quarterbacks and linemen were all eating upstairs and the rookies ventured up to talk to them. The Browns drafted York in the fourth round last April and, while some panned picking a kicker so high nationally, Browns fans knew, thanks to years of post-Phil Dawson heartbreak, the difference adding a kicker can make.The Browns gave York 10 days off to rest his leg and he was back kicking in order to knock the rust off on Wednesday and Friday of this week.
“I didn’t want to try a 50-yarder early in this game, I wanted to get him some extra points, some field goals. I just wanted to have him see the ball go through the middle of the uprights,” Stefanski said. “But then we knew if we needed him we were going to call on him.”
