Bryan Dobson, former RTE broadcaster, opened up about his relationship with his late father and shared his dream dinner guests, including a famous sailor, James Joyce, and Van Gogh, during a podcast interview.
Bryan Dobson showed a rarely seen side to him in a recent podcast interview in which he opened up about his relationship with his late father. The former RTE broadcaster appeared as a guest on Chef Mark Moriarty’s podcast ‘Roasted’, where he spoke about his favourite dish, his mum’s questionable cooking and his early career.
Answering a question about his four dream dinner guests, dead or alive, Bryan said he would like to have a famous sailor Conor O’Brien who sailed around the world in the 1920s: “He was a bit of an irascible fella apparently, but I’d be fascinated to talk to him.” Read more: Bryan Dobson reveals catalyst that led him to leave RTE: 'I'd been talking about it with my wife'Next Bryan said while he’s fascinated by people in the arts, he never really had an opportunity to interview them, so James Joyce and Van Gogh are his next dream dinner guests. The final seat, however, is reserved for a more personal acquaintance. The usually stoic Dobson becomes noticeably emotional as he chooses his Dad, who passed away in 1991, as his final dream guest. “My father died when I was still quite young, my early 30s and I had lived for a good few of the previous years in Belfast - I had worked for the BBC,” Bryan explained. “And I never really had the chance to get to know him as an adult and just talk. If I could sit with him again…”. Becoming emotional, Barry pauses for a poignant moment before continuing, “Sorry I hadn’t expected to feel emotional. “If I could shoot the breeze, I don’t know whether I’d sit down for dinner, maybe go for a pint or something like that. We were quite different, I think he was pleased to see the career I had, I was getting places and things were going well, but I would like that chance.” You can listen to the interview in full on 'Roasted with Mark Moriarity" wherever you get your podcasts.
