Finance and public expenditure ministers determined to stick to plan despite demands from cabinet colleagues
The doors of the elegant Department of Finance building normally close on Friday evenings for the weekend. Not so this weekend.
Finance minister Michael McGrath, public expenditure minister Paschal Donohoe and their officials are busily putting the finishing touches to Budget 2024, to be announced on Tuesday. Amid heightened concern around a worsening global economy, stubbornly high inflation, overruns in the health sector and with elections looming, Donohoe and McGrath are under pressure.
