Ayrshire Tigers captain James Doull was hailed as a “true legend” of powerchair football when he died in May.

A wheelchair footballer whose death shocked the sport left behind a dossier alleging persistent bullying in the sport.

Now James’s parents have called for a higher level inquiry into bullying within disabled football in Scotland. Grieving mum Ann Doull, 77, said her son was made to feel isolated and distressed by incessant phone calls from coaching staff. Ann said: “There was just no way that a man with spina bifida, living on benefits could do that, even with a carer.” But she insisted coaches “would not take no for an answer”.

He told his parents he was upset when given an alleged ultimatum to replace his powerchair with a more sophisticated model. James wrote: “My experience with the Scotland Team has had an impact on my mental health, confidence and almost made me quit the sport completely.”
