The League of Ireland Premier Division table could have looked a lot different after this one, so tight is the race for Europe.
Just when it looked like they had thrown away the win, Shamrock Rovers’ super-sub Graham Burke produced a spectacular intervention in Waterford.
By half-time against Waterford, they looked a good bet to register all three points and leapfrog their opponents. The 18-year-old, making just his fifth first-team appearance, showed outstanding attacking instincts throughout the opening period. Yet the visitors only managed to head into the break with the narrowest of leads - and that was all the ammo Waterford boss Keith Long needed for his half-time teamtalk.
Spotting O’Sullivan’s dart into the area, Nugent spun a delightful ball into his path; the young defender took a touch with his right foot and finished with his left, shooting across goal and inside the right-hand post. Had the ball been a fraction slower, he would have had a second goal. Connecting with his studs, however, he could only watch as his effort skidded narrowly wide.
Pohls raced off his line but was beaten to Rowan McDonald’s cross by the Blues ace, who lifted the ball over the keeper.
