U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he might never run for elected office again, sidestepping questions at the WSJCEOCouncil summit about whether he still harbored hopes for the presidency
WASHINGTON—Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he might never run for elected office again, sidestepping questions about whether he still harbored hopes for the presidency or might challenge Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
"I don't know that I’ll ever run for office again," Mr. Buttigieg said at The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council on Tuesday. Asked if he would ever consider challenging Ms. Harris, Mr. Buttigieg demurred, saying he was happy in his current White House role, where he has been a prominent advocate of the Biden administration's goals to rebuild the country's civil infrastructure.
"The last thing on my mind right now is campaigns," he said. "Nature hates a vacuum, and so does the commentariat. And so if there isn’t drama, some will be developed in order to have something to talk about." Despite Washington chatter about whether Mr. Buttigieg and Ms. Harris could wind up competing to succeed President Biden, Mr. Buttigieg said his focus was on working to implement the bipartisan infrastructure package and advocating the passage of a social-spending measure.
