It can be a complicated process
Fifteen months ago if you were to ask me or my partner about the basic steps involved in buying a house, the best bit of knowledge you would get from us would be “did you know that ‘mortgage’ has the letter ‘T’ in the middle!?”.However, having stumbled our way through the process and come out the other side with a set of house keys in our hand, we felt like sharing a few tidbits we learned along the way.
A whole lot of precious time A lot of horror-stories you’ll hear from anyone that was buying or building during COVID were the delays they encountered. Knowing this, we expected some sort of knock on effect from construction backlogs when restrictions were lifted. If a builder, solicitor or service provider tells you an expected timeline - double or triple that timeline to avoid disappointment.
Expect the Unexpected Mike Tyson once said: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” and that fits quite well when looking at the finances around buying a house. You can plan and budget to the exact cent but something will come up that is going to hit your wallet. Whether it’s the cost of copper impacting the cost of raw materials or miscalculating the VAT rate something will come along that you hadn’t expected at all. Happens to the best of us.
