The others, of course, were two-time winner Archie Griffin in 1974-75 and Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, who finished third in 1954 before winning in 1955. Stroud cannot catch the legendary running back, but with the race apparently wide open up until Monday’s voting deadline, he could match Cassady while becoming OSU’s first winner since Troy Smith in 2006.
Stroud spent much of the season as the award’s front-runner, but other challengers emerged late. Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker broke through with a signature win at Alabama. Caleb Williams took USC to the brink of playoff contention. TCU’s Max Duggan showed up with a gutsy performance in the Big 12 championship game.
Along the way, Stroud continued his same steady efficiency as the engine in one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. He leads the nation in pass efficiency raring and touchdown passes . He ranks barely behind Hooker and Coastal Carolina’s Todd Centeio in yards per attempt .
