The imaginative and unpredictable author whose 2021 novel Light Perpetual was Booker Prize longlisted is back with a counter-factual thriller set on the banks of the Mississippi Riveris one of England’s most imaginative, unpredictable and consistently fascinating contemporary writers. He made his name as an author of non-fiction before 2010’s, was Booker Prize longlisted and imagined the lives five south Londoners may have led had they not been killed by a V2 bomb in the Second World War.

The action unfolds across six days, beginning when two detectives, Joe Burrow and Phineas Drummond, are called to a dead body that has been abandoned on the roof of Cahokia’s Land Trust building. It turns out to be that of Ku Klux Klansman Fred Hopper, who has a Native secessionist slogan written on his head in blood.

It can take time to get to grips with theAnopa words, and keep track of how individuals and groups relate to each other, at the same time as following the police procedural. Spufford knows this and tries to keep the reader on board with expositional dialogue and scenes where the detectives write down the chain of events, ostensibly as reports. I found this helpful and, with the novel moving at a swift pace elsewhere, a welcome slowing-down of the action that did not feel clunky.
