Bears score 21 points in the fourth quarter to pick up first home win in Big Game rivalry since 2008
Stanford added to its 10-6 halftime lead, going 71 yards in 11 plays on its first possession of the third quarter. Three Cal defensive players had shots at tackling receiver Elijah Higgins after he took a passing the right flat from McKee but Higgins got past all of them to complete the 9-yard scoring play that made it 17-6 with 8:31 left in the third quarter.
The Bears ended a seven-quarter stretch without an offensive touchdown when Plummer threw to Monroe Young, who made a sliding catch in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown with 11:18 left in the fourth quarter. Both teams scored on their first two possessions of the game, which then settled into a defensive battle for the remainder of the first half. Stanford held a 10-6 lead at the break on the basis of Mitch Leaguer’s 1-yard touchdown run with 12:08 left in the opening period.
Cal got a pair of field goals from senior Dario Longhetto, the first of the a career-best 54-yarder. That was one yard shy of the Big Game record for either team, a 55-yarder by Cal’s Tom Schneider in 2006, which also shares the Bears’ record for the longest in any game. The Bears could have gone in front late in the half but Plummer was picked off in the end zone on a first-and-goal pass intended for wide receiver Mavin Anderson. Stanford safety Alaka’i Gilman stepped in front of Anderson to make the interception.
Cal figured to run the ball extensively against a Stanford rushing defense that ranks among the worst in the country. But the Bears threw passes on their first 14 plays and 22 of their first 23. The Bears had just 22 rushing yards at halftime but finished with 113.
