Call for pension increase in Budget as more than half of older people find it difficult to pay bills
ALONE is calling on the Irish Government to make "urgent investments" in Budget 2024, after a survey showed that 75% of older people in Ireland have been "severely impacted" by the cost-of-living crisis.
Heating and energy costs were the biggest concerns, followed by household maintenance costs, food prices, healthcare costs and transport. The organisation has asked that the Government deliver an action plan to combat loneliness, significantly increase funding for Housing Adaptation Grants by a minimum of €85m, commit to a minimum of 25% of all new builds for social housing to be developed to age-friendly and universal design standards and develop and fund a programme of strategic capital investment in care and support for older people.
He stressed that one in five older people are living in poverty today, and older people living alone are particularly "at risk."
