According to a new report, Call of Duty is expected to remain on PlayStation for at least three more years due to contractual obligations.
Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit are being updated as new information becomes available.
According to a new report, Call of Duty will continue to be released on PlayStation for at least the next three years. Fans have been heavily speculating about the future of Call of Duty following Microsoft's purchase of Activision, as it's one of the biggest franchises in all of the entertainment industry and it's hard to imagine it being siphoned to one platform.
Rumors have already been swirling about Call of Duty ditching its yearly releases, something that has probably hurt the series more than benefited it in recent years. Although Call of Duty has managed to stay a consistent top seller every year, the franchise's popularity has dwindled in the shooter community. The combination of lackluster, rushed games and general fatigue has made some believe it's time for a break.
At the very least, a Warzone sequel implies there will be at least one actively supported Call of Duty game on PlayStation even if the series becomes fully exclusive to Xbox. Microsoft still doesn't own Activision quite yet, but the deal is expected to close by the summer of 2023. By then, Microsoft will likely begin to map out the future of the series and determine whether or not it wishes to cement it as an Xbox exclusive franchise.
Rumors suggest Call of Duty 2022 will release in October and it may be one of the last traditional entries in the franchise. Activision is expected to announce the game in the summer and it'll likely be the last Call of Duty released before Microsoft officially acquires the publisher. Similarly, Call of Duty 2023 could also be the last mainline entry in the series on PlayStation, though it seems like that remains to be seen. .
