The one-off social welfare grant benefit more than 30,000 households a year at a cost of €31 million
The Government has been urged to reinstate a one-off social welfare grant that would benefit more than 30,000 households a year.
READ MORE: Bill which will see jobseekers receive up to €450 a week in welfare payments passed by Oireachtas It is estimated that the cost of reintroducing the grant would be close to €31 million per annum and would increase annually. However, the Fine Gael TD said there are a range of supports available for people following bereavement "which provide more significant support than the former grant".
This grant is available to widows, widowers or surviving civil partners who have one or more dependent children living with them at the date of death, or a widow or surviving civil partner whose child is born within 10 months of the date of death of her spouse or civil partner.
