Renewed calls have been made on the Government to postpone the next scheduled increase in excise duty on fuel which is due to kick in at the start of next month.
The representative group for fuel providers, Fuels for Ireland, claims that, with the Dáil going into recess this week, the Minister for Finance has only days to take action to prevent what it calls an additional financial burden on consumers.
Duty was reduced by 20 cent per litre for petrol and by 15 cent per litre for diesel in the summer of 2022 in response to the inflationary surge that resulted from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The planned increase on August 1st would see an extra 4 cent being added to the petrol price while diesel would go up by an additional 3 cent per litre.
