Calvin Murphy , Elvin Hayes and Bruce Matthews will be inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.The Houston Sports Hall of Fame will grow by three members next year with basketball Hall of Famers Calvin Murphy and Elvin Hayes and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews being selectedThursday as the Class of 2023 inductees. The trio will be honored at the annual Houston Sports Awards on Jan. 25 at the Wortham Theater.
Murphy, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993, played all 13 seasons of his career with the Rockets, including his rookie year in San Diego before the franchise moved to Houston. The 74-year-old Murphy, who is part of the AT&T SportsNet Southwest broadcast team for Rockets games, still ranks third on the franchise’s all-time scoring list behind only Hakeem Olajuwon and James Harden. He also is second in games played behind Olajuwon and second in assists behind Harden.
Hayes, who went into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990, also was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 and made the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team last year. After leading University of Houston to two Final Fours, Hayes was the No. 1 overall pick of the San Diego Rockets. The 12-time All-Star played seven of his 16 NBA seasons with the Rockets and still ranks fifth on the franchise’s all-time scoring list and second in rebounds.
The previous inductees into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame, which started in 2018, are: Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon, Nolan Ryan, Jack Burke, George Foreman, A.J. Foyt, Dan Pastorini, Carl Lewis, Mary Lou Retton, Rudy Tomjanovich, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Andre Johnson, Guy V. Lewis, Bill Yeoman, Roger Clemens, Clyde Drexler and Sheryl Swoopes.
