A rally was held outside the offices of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport ahead of a meeting where board members agreed to start work on bus franchising.
Campaigners backing a move towards public control of buses in the greater Glasgow area say services are currently unreliable and “extortionate”.
Ahead of SPT’s meeting this morning, activists held a rally outside the organisation’s offices, organised by campaign group Better Buses Strathclyde. In Glasgow, she said, the buses “will be displayed, if you’re lucky to get a display, they’ll say that it’s coming, and you wait ages and when it’s cancelled, it doesn’t tell you”.
The Better Buses for Strathclyde campaign is supported by the Scottish TUC, Friends of the Earth Scotland, Get Glasgow Moving, The Poverty Alliance and many other groups. It wants to see the bus network in public control. “These bus companies cannot be trusted. If SPT signs on the dotted line, this BSIP is going to delay the regulation of our buses, it is going to delay the setting up of a public operator. It has to be stopped.”
“More service users and workers have been struggling with poorly planned routes, extortionate fares and badly maintained services. Now there is a chance to change that.” Join G lasgow Live's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.
