🔎 Can the monarchy win over Gen Z? 💬 'King Charles's saving grace is his interest in the climate'

. The data showed 41 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds want an elected head of state, with only 31 per cent wanting to see the monarchy continue. This marked a substantial change since the same survey two years previously in 2019 when the polls showed 46 per cent were in favour and 26 per cent preferred an elected alternative.Although older demographics have also experienced fluctuating feelings about the crown in recent years, they are nowhere near as marked as younger people.

For Dani Barker, 24, she thinks greater transparency on these platforms would be beneficial in helping young people learn more and appreciate the need for a modern-day monarchy – as well as understand who the different figures in the family tree are. Instead of relying on a sense of national pride as a reason to keep the monarchy, something that may not resonate in the same way with younger people, they must remind the public what the royals have to offer, says Norton. “We’re in an era where people aren’t necessarily driven by nationalist pride, so they have to find another hook to gain interest from people,” she explains.

This transparency online includes sharing ‘ordinary moments’ like the children starting school that people can look at and see their own lives reflected back – which isn’t always easy when you live in a palace. “We have seen the pictures of the three Wales children starting school and I think that’s really relatable to people, particularly as the children grow up and become teenagers,” says Norton.
