Canada draws Belgium, Croatia and Morocco at FIFA World Cup in Qatar
Canada will play Belgium, Croatia and Morocco in the opening round of the 32-team tournament, placed into Group F as the last country selected at the World Cup draw in Doha, Qatar on Friday.
“To have our team pulled out and to see that this is real and Canada is on the big stage now and we’re ready to play in Qatar. We know the teams we’ve got, and we’ve got a wonderful opportunity ahead of us. Everything that came out of that draw was an opportunity for this country.” Belgium feature world class stars such as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and midfielder Eden Hazard of Real Madrid, Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City, defender Jan Vertonghen, a longtime standout for Tottenham Hotspur and now at Benfica, and striker Romelu Lukaku of Chelsea.
“We’ll be at our best when we rely on our grit and our spirit and to bring that ‘no fear’ that opportunity that exists in those type of games against the best players in the world.” “We won’t be naive, but we’ll have no fear coming into this,” Herdman said. “We see the opportunities to pioneer for this country and get after scoring that first goal for Canada at a World Cup.”
Spain, the playoff winner between Costa Rica and New Zealand, Germany and Japan make up Group E, while Group G features Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon. Now knowing who it will face, Canada has plenty of time to prepare for the World Cup, and Herdman hopes to schedule at least one exhibition game in the international window this summer.
