As Canada’s national team programs are on the verge of signing “a historic collective bargaining agreement,” Bontis said he will “unfortunately not be leading the organization when it happens. I acknowledge that this moment requires change.
“Serving as a volunteer for this organization, and witnessing the tremendous achievements we’ve been able to accomplish together, has been some of the proudest moments of my life. Winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup at home.
After essentially getting a vote of no confidence from the heads of Canada’s provincial soccer organizations, Bontis was left with few options. He is still employed as a professor at McMaster University and was serving as Canada Soccer president without a salary. Bontis recognized that the calls for change would only intensify, especially with him being called to testify in front of Canada’s Heritage Committee in March. — Whether Earl Cochrane remains as general secretary remains to be seen.
