Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney , accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, arrived at Dublin Airport to begin a two-day official visit to Ireland . He was welcomed by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and his wife Mary, along with Canadian Ambassador to Ireland Dennis King and his wife Jana Hemphill, and Irish Ambassador to Canada John Concannon and his wife Mary.
Prime Minister Carney, who has Irish grandparents from County Mayo, is set to engage in a series of events in Dublin and will later travel to Mayo to explore his heritage. Taoiseach Martin expressed his honor in hosting the Prime Minister, highlighting the visit as an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the deep bilateral relationship between Ireland and Canada.
He noted the upcoming signing of a strategic economic partnership and emphasized the significance of Carney's Irish roots, adding that County Mayo looks forward to welcoming him home. The two leaders are scheduled to hold a meeting at Government Buildings on Saturday, followed by a dinner at Dublin Castle. They will announce a new bilateral cooperation framework covering trade and investment, life sciences, research and innovation, and security and defence.
The visit follows recent legislative progress in Ireland toward ratifying the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada. According to official data, over 4.4 million Canadians, representing more than 12% of the population, claim Irish heritage, underscoring the enduring historical ties between the two nations. Investment trends show a 131% increase in Canadian investment in Ireland since 2016, while Ireland has become Canada's eighth largest foreign investor.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Carney will travel to County Mayo to connect with his ancestral homeland, concluding a visit aimed at deepening diplomatic, economic, and cultural connections
