Mia Clark scores from 17 yards out with 10.4 seconds left to secure the crown. No one enjoyed it more than first-year head coach Kat Keivens, who took over for Laurie Berger.
With just 10.4 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Mia Clark launched a shot from 17 yards out that snuck just inside the left post, giving Canyon Hills a thrilling 2-1 victory over Torrey Pines in the Open Division field hockey finals at La Costa Canyon High. No one enjoyed it more than first-year head coach Kat Keivens, who took over for longtime legend Laurie Berger. Berger won 17 titles at the school formerly called Serra.“Very surreal feeling,” said Keivens, whose team finished 26-0.
But Valley Center was awarded a corner, which must be played out. Savannah Morrissett fed the corner to the top of the circle. Adrielle Flores let go of a drive, Maddie Latulippe tipped the ball in front of the goal, the ball trickled in and bedlam broke out.“I just put my stick in, got a touch on it and somehow it went in,” said Latulippe.“When everyone went crazy,” she said.It was the fourth time the rivals played this season. They split the four games, all of which were decided by one goal.
“When they called it a stroke, I was scared and I almost started crying,” said Fornof, a junior. “Because that girl is amazing. It was so close to being game over.”“It was scary,” said Fornof. “That mask has saved me so many times.”In University City’s 41-year history, the Centurions had never won a field hockey championship. Until Saturday, when goalie Emma Giesting rejected four shots in the shootout to secure the win.
