CAO Offers: Accept, Defer, or Wait for an Upgrade?
CAO, College Offers, Accept

The CAO releases its initial batch of college offers, triggering a critical decision-making period for applicants. With a deadline of September 1st, students must decide whether to accept their offered place, request a deferral for a future year, or wait to see if they can secure a spot on a higher-ranked course in subsequent rounds.

The anticipation peaks as the CAO issues its first round of offers on Wednesday, marking the culmination of a year-long application process. Among the 95,710 applicants, many will receive offers for their desired courses, while others will find themselves just outside the cutoff points.

For those offered a place, the immediate decision is whether to accept or defer. Accepting the offer commits the student to the course for the upcoming academic year. Alternatively, deferring allows them to delay their entry by a year, typically to gain work experience, travel, or simply take a break. This decision should be made carefully, as the college must approve the deferral and specific conditions for re-applying the following year must be met.

The window for accepting offers closes on September 1st at 3pm, after which unaccepted places will be re-offered to applicants on the waiting list
