Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher continued his run of excellent form on Thursday with a man of the match display for Ireland against Finland.
Gavin Bazunu ’s return to fitness in the new year is helping to focus Caoimhin Kelleher ’s mind on what needs to happen if he is to hold onto the number one jersey for Ireland.
He more than made up for that on Thursday night when he saved a late penalty in Ireland’s 1-0 win over Finland at the Aviva Stadium, ensuring the Boys in Green would not face automatic relegation to League C. “My goal is to stay as the No 1 and keep performing well. I don’t think anybody can take that away from me if I do that.”
With the above in mind, it’s no surprise to hear Kelleher stress that clean sheets are the “building blocks” to success. “Obviously it was a good result, to get the win was the most important thing. I thought the performance overall was decent, it can be better, obviously but the result is the most important thing.”
“We defended well, got a goal as well but it's important to win those games as well, performance aside, first and foremost the result is the most important thing.”
