Why does Captain Marvel get so much hate from the internet? The answer lies in Carol's character, her role in comic events, and the X-Men movies.
Marvel's Captain Marvel is one of the more popular heroes in the company's current A-list lineup, but she has a substantial amount of readers who strongly dislike her. Her detractors on the internet are as vocal as her fans, perhaps even more so.
Carol Danvers is not the first Captain Marvel, though she is the best-known iteration of the character. Initially appearing as a supporting character in the Captain Marvel series, she eventually acquired powers of her own and adopted the name Ms. Marvel . She later took on other names such as Warbird, then Binary, then Ms. Marvel again before finally "taking the damn name" in 2012 when she officially became the next and current Captain Marvel.
Marvel has plenty of other ultra-powerful female superheroes the company could have promoted instead of Captain Marvel - but unfortunately, many of them were mutants.
Carol Danvers has the potential to become a well-liked character once again, but Marvel's strategy must change. The very character trait that endears her to some - her arrogance - is also despised by others. Arrogance is fine, but it must be one aspect of a character and not dominate their personality. Captain Marvel was perhaps doomed through a combination of an uncompromising attitude and Marvel's stubbornness, but it's not too late for writers to save Carol Danvers from herself.
