How does Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury look at Kyler Murray's speedy scrambling ability? 'I look at him as like a gift from God.'

When the Cardinals drafted quarterback Kyler Murray with the No.1 overall pick in 2019, coach Kliff Kingsbury looked at Murray’s ability to scramble out of trouble like a cat chasing the beam of a laser pointer as a luxury.

“It’s just part of the whole package and when he’s making great decisions on when to run, when to get down, when to throw it away, when to step up in the pocket, that’s when we’re at our best and he did a great job of that.” His touchdown run, which perplexed Raiders defenders almost as much as his wild two-point conversion scamper, was the 21st of his young career in 48 starts. Since the NFL merger in 1970, only three other quarterbacks — Josh Allen , Cam Newton and Daunte Culpepper — had more rushing touchdowns in their first 50 career starts.

“Yeah, it’s good that it’s not happening to us,” Cardinals defensive end Zach Allen said. “Going against Kyler in practice, you’re used to it. It’s nice to know it’s not just you, though, you know?”What makes Murray’s jitterbug moves so dangerous is the excellent vision he has to make it work. Murray knows exactly what he can get away with and when there’s a running lane to get into the end zone. Even when it looks like he’s a second away from getting creamed, he gets there first.

“I was just trying to make a play,” he said. “I told the guys in the huddle we really had no choice. We were down 16. We had to convert the first one and once you get the second opportunity, you’ve got to convert that one. I was fortunate enough to make a play right there.” Murray is only 25 years old, but it’s fair to wonder just how long he can keep his elite speed. Every athlete eventually loses a step or two and Murray undoubtedly will be no different. It happens to the best of the best.
