SMS Care Limited in Blackburn has been handed the lowest rating a service can receive from the the care watchdog CQC
A care home where staff were found to work excessive hours with little training and residents were not given enough food has been slammed by inspectors. SMS Care Limited on Gorse Road in Blackburn has received an 'Inadequate' rating by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission .
Most were long-term agency staff that had been working excessive hours and long shifts. One staff member had worked a 20 hour shift and a second had only one day off during a three week period. Some staff were working over 60 hours in a week. The CQC are the independent regulator for health and social care in England. They visit and inspect services such as care homes, dentists, hospitals and doctor's surgeries.
The report reads: "Most meals provided were frozen ready meals. Food was not being stored in line with guidance in the fridges, dates were not recorded on an opened and uncovered plate of food. Another person's care records were "written in a derogatory manner and lacked empathy." The report adds: "A relative told us they were concerned staff did not always identify when people's confidence with personal care was changing. One relative told us, "I'm just not as happy about the home as I used to be."
The report further states: "One accident report which had been completed had no evidence of the actions taken, if this had been followed up by the management, or if any lessons had been learned.
